When did Del Mar become the life of the party?
Celebrity and celebrating run in the blood of this iconic coastal California city. When ‘Colonel’ Jacob Taylor purchased 338 acres from a homesteader in 1885, he envisioned creating a seaside resort for the rich and famous, and built all the amenities they might desire. With the construction of the San Diego County Fairgrounds and then the Racetrack in 1937, Del Mar established itself as the place to stay and play for myriad Hollywood celebrities.
Much more than a horse racing mecca, Del Mar offers big sandy beaches, steady surf, a dog friendly beach & prime people watching.
Just north of the wild beauty that is Torrey Pines State Park & Beach, lies the enchanting village of Del Mar, with two ocean front parks (Seagrove & Powerhouse), a dedicated Dog Beach and the famous Del Mar Racetrack & Fairgrounds (home to the acclaimed World Famous Ugly Dog Contest)
