Extending south from the mouth of the San Diego River to Sunset Cliffs Park, Ocean Beach is a tight-knit community that favors mom & pop stores and cafes to chain stores and corporate conglomerates.
Ocean Beach graces the western, ocean-facing edge of the peninsula shared with the community of Point Loma. Sheltering the north end of Coronado as well as the San Diego bay from the waves of the Pacific, OB has managed to retain the laid-back beach attitude of yesterday, even as it lies in such close proximity to today’s San Diego. Newport Avenue is the downtown center of OB, and home to the weekly Farmer’s Market that highlights every Wednesday evening. Antique shops and stylish boutiques span decades of ’style’, while restaurants & bars keep the streets busy well after dark.
At the farthest north corner of Ocean Beach, San Diego’s original Dog Beach remains a favorite among lucky hounds, where they’ve been welcome to romp in the waves with their humans since 1972. In this dog-loving community, it’s easy to find the heart of OB, and appreciate what lucky locals work so hard to preserve.
