If La Jolla is the Grand Dame, then Encinitas is the hip, holistic kid sister in our family of beach cities. Both quintessentially charming and ‘beach-ified’ bohemian at the same time, Encinitas boasts steadfast fans and friends of all ages and lifestyles.
The downtown center of coastal ‘Old Encinitas’ sits along Highway 101, primarily between the Self-Realization Fellowship Center and Encinitas Boulevard. A destination spot for over a hundred years, snapshots of the past yet remain in the historic 1928 La Paloma movie theater and the 1883 Encinitas School House.
One-of-a-kind boutiques, shops and restaurants thrive along Hwy 101 to the delight of local and visitor alike. Diners can feast on a diverse selection of fare including Peruvian, Italian, Japanese, Vietnamese, Vegan, Mexican, Thai, Viennese, French, Fusion and Americana. Throughout the year, fairs and festivals, concerts and athletic events, dot the landscape.
Sitting just west of the large gilded ‘lotus blossoms’ of the Self-Realization Fellowship Center, is the Center’s tranquil and scenic Meditation Gardens, which are open daily to the public at no charge. Head north on Third Street, and you’ll see the curious Boat Houses, sitting at their permanent anchor high above the water’s edge. If time permits, an entertaining walking tour can be enjoyed, courtesy of the Encinitas Main Street Association.
