Sandbag needs your help!

“Can I get a hand here?”

The storms came last week and brought us some much needed rain. But they also brought us something else…Trash. Rain washes it into the storm drains and into the ocean. Wind blows over trash cans and sends its bounty on a free flight, which always seems to land on our beaches. Last week, we had heavy rains and gale force winds. That’s a lot of trash!

You can help & here’s how… (Hey, you still have those extra holiday calories to burn off, right?)

Torry Pines Golf Course - aerial

A gliders view of the Torrey Pines Golf Course

As we usher in a new decade at the world famous Torrey Pines Golf Course, we also usher in a new tournament sponsor. The tournament formerly known as the Buick Invitational is no more. Farmers Insurance has stepped up to the tee box as new title sponsor, giving us the Farmers Insurance Open 2010. With current economic conditions, sponsorships aren’t viable for many businesses, including members of the struggling auto industry.  After twenty years of sponsorship, Buick announced last year that they could not return in 2010 for the 4th stop on the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines.

“It was only within the last few weeks that this ultra-prestigious tournament found a title sponsor…”

Overweight Seafaring Tourists Invade The San Diego Coastline

Gray whales have the longest known migration of any mammal. Their 10,000 – 12,000 mile round trip route takes them from their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic seas, down to the warm waters of Mexico. Along the Baja Peninsula, established ‘calving lagoons’ offer sanctuary from harsh Arctic winters and provide the perfect nursery.

Each year from January to April, we gaze from boats, piers, and shoreline, scanning the waves for a sight of these barnacle encrusted leviathans. During their migration, they pass close to the San Diego coastline.  To the delight of the lucky, they’ll breach the water with an inquisitive eye to see what all the fuss is about. When they do , it’s truly a sight to behold. In celebration of their much anticipated arrival, San Diego is holding their 2nd annual Big Bay Whale Festival and it’s all happening this Saturday, January 23rd!

Read on for festival details, ‘children cruise free’ & more…

Chargers take the Field

What’s the sizzling hot ticket in San Diego this week?

It’s the sold out Chargers vs Jets game this Sunday! (OK, so it was an easy question…) On a 11 game winning streak, the Bolts face a tough match up with the New York Jets. But, if the electricity around town is any indicator, this winning streak is destined to continue.

The ever popular ‘Bud Light Power Party’ kicks off the day with live music, large screen TVs airing pre-game shows, food, games, & prizes. It all begins at 9 AM and will continue until 12:30 PM, right before kickoff at 1:40 PM.

Katharine McPhee (of 5th season American Idol fame) will be performing at the Power Party, as well as singing our national anthem at the start of the game.

Here’s some tips to get to & fro stress free…
