La Jolla Children’s Pool – Barking Up The Wrong Beach?

Everyone has a strong opinion, no middle-of-the-road here…

“The children or the seals?”

The Children’s Pool  in La Jolla was built in 1931 with the funds and support of grand dame Ellen Browning Scripps, for the purpose of providing a safe place for children to enjoy the sea.  Long before there were State Beaches lining our coastline, access was much more limited and safe areas like this one were a precious commodity.

In the 1970’s, harbor seals and sea lions began to take to this sheltered beach, their population growing beyond the size of their favored Seal Rock, located nearby.  As their numbers continued to grow, human occupation of the Childern’s Pool became more difficult. Eventually, the pool became unhealthy due to bacteria levels resulting from the animals’ waste.

“Now we find ourselves in the middle of a stinky sticky situation…”

Hornblower Cruises Goes To The Dogs

Hornblower Cruises Pet Day Participant

Dog Day On The Bay was a howling success this year down on San Diego’s Em‘bark’adero. More than 500 dogs [and their humans] united paws to show their support for the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Spike & Wilson Of Most Handsome Fame

“So, I met up with Wilson to see how he’s found celebrity..”

My pal Wilson won the  Most Handsome title at the 14th Annual Ugly Dog Contest last March. I was curious to see how fame had affected my old friend.

Well, he said fame hadn’t changed him much. He still gets the same kibble, sports the same leash and collar. But I couldn’t help but notice a spring in his step and faster wag to his tail.

“Multi-million $$ endorsements on the horizon?”

The Secret Cave Beneath La Jolla

“Smuggler’s lair?”

A mystery dwells beneath the La Jolla Coast Walk.  The Cave Store, is more than its banal name would imply. Take a walk with us back in time to 1902.

A steep descent down 145 uneven steps contained within, takes one below street level to a secret cave where crashing waves rush in…

“Hmm, a hidden sea cave accessible by land within a sheltered cove…”.

Sea Dogs For Helen Woodward Animal Center

May 14th, 2009 is a special day for Hornblower Cruises of San Diego and Helen Woodward Animal Center, as they host their 9th Annual Pet Rescue Day on the Bay.
